The first day I arrived in Barcelona my sister in law said to me: “I have to take you to a tea shop that you will love. I thought of you when I discovered it”. And she kept on saying that, day after day until she finally took me. I have to admit that I wasn’t too enthusiastic about it as I never imagined there would be such a hidden gem in a city where the sun is always around and the beach is so close, as it makes you crave more for a cold Vichy rather than a warm cup of tea. But well, there we were, at Tea Shop in Barrio El Borne. As I looked around I realised it was a place to discover, to smell and taste…
I tried two iced teas: the Gracia Blend, a mix of green tea flavored with vanilla, orange peel, rose petals, cornflower and sunflower and the Summer Nights, also a green tea with cornflower blossoms, jasmine, sunflowers, daisies, lemongrass, rose petals and lemon peel. On a warm day like that, those teas were just perfection! I am not personally a big fan of blends but I discovered that I do seem to enjoy them cold. I didn’t buy the ones I tried but I bought one called the Morú Superior o Moruno Superior; a blend of Pinhead Gunpowder Special with a variety of mint leafs that I have been preparing cold in a jug almost every day. Even cold, you can appreciate the excellent quality of the gunpowder (which I very much enjoy hot as well). The light amber colour and the aftertaste of this tea are very pleasant and its strong body but mellow taste, makes it perfect to be enjoyed cold as well. I also bought one thermometer and a handmade Japanese scoop.
The lady from the store was a very charming and helpful. She was well trained, an authentic tea lover and aware of each one of the teas from the shop. She was pleased to show me each tea I asked for, to give me details about their origins and happy to talk about personal tastes and preferences. She also gave me few tea samples from the ones I tasted at the store that I later on shared with the rest of the family at home. Few days later we went back to buy some gifts and the experience was the same: pleasant, nice and enjoyable from beginning to end.
If you are a tea connoisseur and want to buy premium teas, this is a good place to go in Barcelona. If you are a tea enthusiast and a blend lover, this is also a place to go and ask for recommendations. The staff will be able to guide you through their variety according to your preferences. You will be able to see and smell the teas before buying and you can definitely get some nice accessories to complement your tea.
Last but not least, a big thank you to Pilar for thinking of me and taking me to the store!
